Steady-state and transient hydraulics

In brief

Mohamed Alyassi’s process-engineering experience covers PFDs, P&IDs and specifications; hydraulic and surge analysis; and participation in HAZOP, LOPA and SIL safety reviews for water and energy systems.

Process definition

PFDs and P&IDs

Development and review of process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, design narratives and technical specifications.

Hydraulics

Steady-state analysis

System-head, flow and pressure assessment for pipeline and network operating cases, with AFT Fathom experience.

Transients

Surge studies

Assessment of pressure envelopes and transient risks, including AFT Impulse experience and evaluation of mitigation requirements.

Process safety

Structured reviews

Experience supporting HAZOP, LOPA and SIL reviews to identify hazards, safeguards and risk-reduction requirements.

  1. Define the basis. Establish system boundaries, operating cases, design criteria and the available source information.
  2. Represent the process. Translate the system into clear process documents, equipment duties and control intent.
  3. Test hydraulic behaviour. Examine steady-state performance and transient pressure extremes against system constraints.
  4. Review risk. Use structured process-safety methods to challenge deviations, consequences and safeguards.
  5. Document decisions. Record assumptions, interfaces, actions and limitations so the technical basis remains traceable.

From December 2024 to March 2026, Mohamed worked as a Process Engineer at Mott MacDonald across process design, hydraulic and surge studies, and safety reviews for water and energy projects.
